The race of the poor christs

It’s difficult to understand the meaning of "povero cristo" [poor christ] if you are not Italian, because it’s a cultural thing. It has nothing to do with Christ or the Bible, although it’s difficult to have nothing to do with the Church here in Italy. The term “poor Christ'' is used to refer to a poor or unfortunate person, but with a sense of irony.

In English you say "everyone has their own cross to carry". Your "cross" could be your partner, or your roommate who really stinks, or even a fight against cancer, job insecurity or an inability to resist sweets.

For this project, 50 “poor Christs”, were selected on the basis of their individual crosses, in order to compete against each other for their great and small misfortunes, running carrying a large cross with their "cross" or problem written on it.

The idea of the project was to lighten that cross just for a moment and laugh together, instead of always complaining.
Many inscriptions arrived, including stories about their individual crosses. Reading them all together was a glimpse of humanity

My cross is the hard choices I must make about my future. They are there, piling up waiting for me, but I spend my days doing stuff like falling in love or signing up for the race of the poor christs

I've undergone two surgeries in the last year, have been unemployed for 5 years, and am ex-disabled at 37 with a titanium prosthesis in my femur, but I have a lap dance pole in my bedroom.

The “poor Christ’s” community is large and varied

WITHOUT DISTINCTION OF GENDER, RACE, RELIGION, OR BANK ACCOUNT.
THE EVENT OFFERED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE TO “COME OUT”
AND FEEL LESS ALONE
TO COMBAT MARGINALIZATION
AND TO EXCORCIZE OUR SENSE OF PERSONAL DISGRACE THROUGH SELF-IRONY
